UBN93 Limerick Bridge Refurbishment
GABE completed the UBN93 Limerick bridge refurbishment for Irish Rail. The €346,680 project involved the preparation and protective painting of the bridge’s metallic structural elements. GABE delivered the complete works in-house, without using subcontractors.
UBN93 is a two-span steel girder bridge over the Milker River in Limerick. The structure consists of six metal girders and a steel troughing deck between masonry abutments. In addition, transverse troughing supports the track ballast across the bridge.
UBN93 Limerick Bridge Refurbishment Works
GABE acted as Principal Contractor and Project Supervisor for the Construction Stage. Therefore, the team managed the complete delivery of the works.
Firstly, GABE provided temporary road access to the site. The team then installed full access scaffolding and encapsulation around the working areas. This created suitable access and helped control the surface preparation and painting operations.
Following this, GABE carried out high-pressure jet washing of the steelwork. The team then used abrasive grit blasting to prepare the metallic surfaces to SA2½. The photographs within the original project case study show the scaffold encapsulation, jet washing and SA2½ grit blasting stages.
Protective Coating Application
After surface preparation, GABE applied a full protective coating system to the bridge steelwork. The works covered all required metallic surfaces and joints. In addition, GABE removed and replaced bridge fixtures as part of the refurbishment programme.
Environmental protection also formed an important part of the project. GABE protected the watercourse, track ballast and surrounding environment throughout the works. Furthermore, the team prepared an Environmental Management Plan detailing preventative measures for the project.
