DeLacy Footbridge Drogheda

DeLacy Footbridge Refurbishment Works

GABE carried out specialist repair and refurbishment works to DeLacy Footbridge in Drogheda, Co. Louth. The project included structural repairs, replacement of bridge components, steel preparation and repainting.

The DeLacy Footbridge refurbishment included the installation of three new sliding joints within the lower tubes. Sections of the existing tubes were carefully cut. The new prefabricated sliding joints were then welded into position.

Temporary hanging scaffold provided safe access to the structure. Sections of bridge decking were also lifted to facilitate the works. These were reinstated following completion.

Existing isolators and insulators within the balustrade vertical supports were replaced. Insulators at the upper and lower hanger connections were also replaced. Associated steelwork was cleaned, repaired and repainted as required.

Steel Preparation and Protective Coatings

Areas of deteriorated paintwork were mechanically prepared to remove loose paint and corrosion. The prepared steel was then repainted to the required specification.

The works also included localised repairs and spot painting. The complete bridge structure was cleaned and prepared before receiving a new paint finish.

Repainting included the main arch, balustrade supports and associated steelwork. This provided a uniform finish across the refurbished structure.

Safe Working and Environmental Protection

Additional safety measures were required due to the location of the footbridge. A rescue boat was provided while works were taking place over the river. Flotation equipment was also provided for operatives.

Dust and debris collection measures were positioned beneath the working areas. These prevented paint, rust and other debris from entering the river during preparation and painting.

Temporary fencing was used to control public access to the works area. Fall-arrest equipment was also used where required during the works.

The completed DeLacy Footbridge refurbishment combined structural repairs, specialist access, steel preparation and protective coating works. The project helped restore and protect the existing footbridge structure.
